For more than 18 years Joe has had an outstanding career in the Publications/Graphics Department of the Yonkers Board of Education. During his tenure, the District has won over three dozen New York State School Public Relations awards along with seven National School Public Relations awards, all for Excellence in Design. His design skills are sought out by other organizations; he has worked on projects for The Guggenheim Museum, Sony Design Center, Dansk International Design and Christie’s Auction House.
As a professional
artist and photographer, Joe has exhibited at a variety of galleries. His
latest work can currently be seen at the superintendents gallery located on
the forth floor of the Yonkers Board of Eduation. It is a collaborative effort
between Joe and photographer, Maurice Mercado. Their work is a unique vision
of school buildings throughout the City of Yonkers. “It’s important
for people to understand that the entire creative process is what makes a
successful image,” states Panella. “It all starts behind the lens
of the camera. You shoot twenty or thirty photos of one subject and walk away
with only one image that captures the emotion, depth and composition you are
looking to express.”
This
is not the first time Joe and Maurice have collaborated on a creative project,
in 2004 they won a Telly Award for a documentary they filmed and produced
entitled, “USS Princeton: Lost But Not Forgotten.”
In 2008, Joe was one of seventy five artists chosen from over 500 applicants nationwide to exhibit one of his photographs at Louisiana State University's annual "Animals in Art" exhibition.
